1976 Pontiac Grand Safari
- The Pontiac Grand Safari was Pontiac’s top-of-the-line station wagon offered from 1971-1978.
- The Grand Safari used the Grille and Interior Trim of the Bonneville and Grand Ville passenger car series, and most (but not all) were trimmed with woodgrain paneling on sides and tailgate.
- The 1974-1976 Grand Safari (and Catalina Safari) Station wagons are the largest Pontiac Vehicles ever produced with a 127-inch wheelbase and a 231.3-inch overall length.
- The Curb Weight is approximately 5300 pounds, the 3-row versions are also the heaviest vehicle the brand ever built.
- This year model features a standard 455 cubic inch/ 4bbl powerplant rated at 200 horsepower. This was the last year of offering for that engine.
- The Clamshell tailgate (marketed as the “Glide-Away” tailgate) was an industry first; The rear power operated glass slides up into the roof while the tailgate slides into a recess under the cargo floor. This was designed to make loading and unloading easier in tight spaces. The system is controlled by switches on the dashboard and a key switch on the rear quarter panel.
- Other options and features include power windows, door locks, and seat, cruise control, tilt wheel, adjustable pedals, vinyl roof, and cornering lamps.
- This example is painted “Durango Bronze” with a matching cross hatch interior and was offered new at $5895 plus options.
- 6,176 were produced for the 1976 year.
